Dream Crusher
I’m at Biggby, which normally I love for its inherent ability to cheer me up (their B Happy marketing works on me).
But, today I am sitting next to two women talking about their high school sons.
Mother A: “I just told Todd [her son] that he cannot study Political Theory in college. He doesn’t like math or science, but in this day in age, it’s just not realistic for him to be studying something so frivolous.”
Mother B reassured Mother A that she was making the right decision in crushing her son’s dreams (because being an engineer is the only possible solution).
No joke. No embellishment. I could not believe what I heard. I desperately wanted to intervene and defend my liberal arts education— to tell them that JMC taught me how to write and how to critically think but then again, I am the rule. I am unemployed. Looking for opportunities (any opportunities) after graduation.
Still, there is something to say about dreams & doing what you love. Thank you parents for letting me chase my dreams.
